Wasps vs Bees – How to Identify Them Before Arranging Pest Control in Dover

Receptionists, office managers and facilities teams are often the first to hear about insects, and a clear internal routine saves time, worry and confusion.

The front desk takes the call

In many workplaces, the person who hears about an insect is the receptionist or office manager. A colleague in the car park, a visitor at the door or a delivery driver reports something stripy near the entrance, and the person at the desk has to decide what to do.

If you work in Dover, on the Kent coast, in an office, depot, shop or similar premises, a simple internal routine can turn a moment of alarm into a calm, organised response.

This works best if it is agreed in advance. A single sheet near the desk, with the questions, the telephone number and the name of the person who decides what happens next, takes ten minutes to write and removes most of the uncertainty.

It also helps to keep the number for the right person handy. Whether that is a facilities manager, a landlord or the owner, the desk should know who to tell the moment a nest is suspected, so that the decision to book is made quickly rather than passed from one person to the next.

A script for the first minute

When someone reports insects, ask these questions in order.

  1. Where exactly are they, and how many?
  2. Are they going in and out of one gap or hole?
  3. Are they smooth, narrow-waisted and bright yellow and black, or round and furry?
  4. Is anyone close to them now? If so, ask them to move away slowly.
  5. Is anyone known to have a sting allergy?

Write down the answers and the time. Whoever makes the booking will find them very useful.

Share the list with colleagues too. The more people who know the questions, the more consistent the information you receive will be. A caretaker, security guard or cleaner may well see the insects before anyone at the desk does.

Controlling the area

Put a cone, a sign or a chair across the nearest route, and offer an alternative door. Tell colleagues and visitors, but keep the tone relaxed. Resist any urge to investigate a nest, because the colony can swarm and sting if it feels threatened.

If the activity is in the car park or loading bay, tell drivers and contractors before they arrive. If it is near a smoking area or a break spot, move the spot for the day. Keep food and drink covered, empty bins regularly and close the bin lids.

Premises with large glass frontage, planters by the door or an outdoor smoking shelter are especially likely to attract insects. Check these places at the start of each day in summer and note anything unusual. It is a small routine that pays for itself.

If a meeting is due outside, or a client is expected to walk past the affected area, rearrange the route in advance and have somebody greet them at the alternative door.

Wasps or bees at the entrance?

Wasps hover near bins, drinks and the gaps in buildings. Bees tend to visit flowering plants and shrubs by the door. A single insect near the entrance is likely a visitor. A line of insects into a small gap, high or low, is more likely a nest.

Late April is when wasps start building, depending on the weather, in gaps in eaves and walls, chimneys, trees, bushes or holes in the ground. The colony grows week by week and peaks in August, when it can hold from 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps.

Honeybees and bumblebees play a real part in pollination, so a local beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation is who to ask. This service treats wasps and nothing else, and we will tell you plainly if it sounds like bees.

Recording and reporting

Keep a short log of reports, with date, time, location and what was done. Whether an incident needs to be recorded in a formal way, or reported to anyone, depends on your own procedures and policies, so check them.

Staff who are stung

Once someone has been stung, wash the site, take out a visible sting and cool it with a cold pack. Do not wait to call 999 if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheeze or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash. Any household member with a known allergy should raise it with their GP in advance.

Where the building is shared with other businesses, tell the managing company or neighbouring tenants. A nest on a shared wall or roof may be their responsibility as much as yours, and the arrangement for dealing with it depends on your lease or agreement.

Booking commercial help

Wasp Exterminator Kent covers commercial premises as well as homes. We can work with your hours, including evenings and weekends, so that your business is not disrupted.

Phone 01622 410 019 to book or leave your details on the contact page. A single nest is priced at a fixed £120 and there is no call-out charge, with one visit guaranteed. Should there be two nests, the second one costs £60 more.

This business is available every day of the week, for homes and commercial premises, with same-day service. Appointments outside office hours are available, and the technicians are fully insured and qualified.

If someone at the property is allergic to stings, tell us when booking and we can prioritise the visit.

Deliveries are a point of vulnerability, because drivers are unfamiliar with the site and in a hurry. A quick word at the gate, or a note on the delivery door, can prevent an incident.

Do not forget visitors with children, or anyone who has told you about an allergy. A word at the desk or a quiet escort to a different entrance is a courteous and effective step.
