Wasp Nest in Your Garden Shed? Safe Treatment Options in East Sutton
An up-and-over garage door is a favourite place for wasps to slip inside. Here is how to spot a nest near it, and how to get the car out safely.
The garage door is rarely airtight
A garage looks solid from the drive, yet the door that fills the front is full of small openings. There is usually a gap along the top where the door meets the frame, a worn rubber seal at the bottom and a few holes where the runners are fixed. Wasps need very little room, and the dark, quiet space above the rails can look like an ideal place to start a nest.
Because the garage is attached to the house for many people, a nest there is more worrying than one at the bottom of the garden. It is often a few metres from a back door or a utility room, and the family walks past it every day.
If you notice wasps crawling along the top edge of the door, or a regular trickle going in under the roof overhang, treat it as a probable nest and keep your distance.
Signs you can see without opening the door
You can learn a lot from outside. The best approach is to stand on the drive at a comfortable distance and spend a minute simply watching the garage front.
- A steady line of wasps going in or out at the same gap near the top of the door.
- Wasps resting on the outside of the door in warm weather, as if guarding a doorway.
- A dry, rasping noise inside that grows louder when the sun hits the roof.
- Small flakes of chewed wood or grey paper-like fragments on the floor below a gap.
- Wasps on the inside of the small window, trying to get out.
If any of these appear, do not pound on the door, and do not use the remote opener just to check. The motor and the sudden movement of the door can set off a defensive reaction, and a door full of wasps is not something you want to raise above your head.
When the car is inside
This is the awkward part. If the car is stored in the garage, you may want to get it out before going to work, or you may want to move it away from the wasps. Whether you can do so depends on where the nest is, and you can only judge that from outside.
If the activity is clearly at one corner of the roof and far from the keypad or handle, you might be able to open the door slowly. If wasps are flying in the doorway itself, or if you hear buzzing as you touch the door, back away. A taxi or a lift for a day is a small cost compared with a sting in an enclosed space.
If the car is outside and the garage is used for storage, leave it closed. A closed door keeps wasps contained and also stops a nervous insect from landing on you.
Telling the business what you see
When you ring, mention that the nest is in a garage and say whether it is above the door, inside the roof space or in a side wall. If the garage is attached to the house, say so, and whether there is an internal door that can be kept shut. These details help the technician plan their approach and decide where to stand.
Wasp Exterminator Kent covers East Sutton and the villages around it, and the work is fully insured and carried out by qualified technicians, for domestic and commercial customers. The fixed price is £120 per nest, with one visit guaranteed and no call-out charge.
If there is another nest at the same address, say in the house eaves, it is £60 extra. The business is open seven days a week and offers same-day service, with evening and weekend appointments if you prefer to be at home. You can book on 01622 410 019 or via the form on the contact page.
What to do inside the house meanwhile
If the garage joins the house, shut the internal door and place a rolled towel along the bottom, so that any wasp which gets in cannot easily find the way through. Keep windows near the garage closed, especially in warm weather. Keep children and pets in a room away from the garage side.
If a wasp does get indoors, stay calm. Open a window in a room well away from the garage and let it find its own way out. Swatting and flapping make a sting more likely. If anyone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if you can see it and use a cold pack. Call 999 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash.
If someone in the family is allergic to wasp stings, say so when booking so that the booking can be prioritised.
Closing the gaps afterwards
When the technician has finished and the garage is calm, look carefully at the door. Replace a perished bottom seal, fit a brush strip along the top where possible and check the frame for splits. Most of these jobs are simple and cheap, and they also help to keep the garage dry and draught-free.
Look at the garage roof edge too, from the ground. A loose fascia board or a lifted tile is just another door in. If there is a repair needed that you cannot reach safely, leave it to a builder or roofer rather than climbing a ladder yourself.
Finally, ask at booking whether the empty nest can be taken down. A cleared space is easier to inspect each spring, and you can then keep the garage useful for what it was built for.
