Wasp Nest in Your Garden Shed? Safe Treatment Options in Higham
Wasps pressed against a shed window usually mean they have found their way in and cannot find the way out. This guide explains the clue.
What the window is telling you
Wasps are drawn towards light. When they are inside a closed shed, they go to the window, crawl up and down the glass and buzz against it. If you see several of them on the pane, or a small pile of dead ones on the sill, that is a strong sign that a nest is inside the building.
Wasps that are simply passing through a garden do not behave this way. They fly in and out freely and have no reason to be at your window. A cluster at the glass tells you they live there and are trying to leave.
Take it as the earliest hint you will get, and act before the numbers increase.
Sheds with a window often have a bench beneath it, and people tend to stand at the bench while working. That means a nest near the window is directly in the working area, so treat it as a priority rather than something that can wait for the weekend.
Looking without disturbing
The temptation is to peer in. Don't. A face at the glass, a tap on the pane or a torch beam against it can excite the insects.
- Stay several steps back and look at the window from an angle.
- Count roughly how many wasps you can see on the glass, then look again later.
- Check whether the number goes up on warm afternoons.
- Look for a small heap of dead wasps on the sill.
- Do not open the window to let them out.
If you open the window, you may allow a few wasps out but you also give those outside a route back, and you put yourself right at the opening.
Give yourself a clear exit route. Stand where you can step away quickly, with no wheelbarrow or hose in the way, and keep watching only for as long as you feel comfortable.
Other windows and openings that matter
A shed window is rarely the only way in or out. A gap in the door, a hole in the felt or a missing pane may all provide an entrance. The window is more like a mirror, showing you that the wasps are inside.
Walk round the shed, still at a distance, and see where the traffic goes. If the entrance is away from the window, the window may be a dead end where the wasps get lost. If the entrance is at the window itself, for example a cracked pane or a broken frame, the traffic will be clearer.
In either case, the safest approach is to close off the shed to people until it has been treated.
If the shed is a workshop with a bench, power tools and extension leads, resist the urge to check whether anything has been damaged. Equipment can be seen to once the nest is treated. Switch off at the consumer unit only if you can reach it without going near the shed.
Making the booking
Wasp Exterminator Kent covers Higham and nearby villages, treating domestic and commercial properties. The fixed price is £120 for each nest, with one visit guaranteed and no call-out charge. If a second nest turns up on the same property, it is £60 extra.
The business is open seven days a week, offers same-day service, and has evening and weekend appointments. If something cannot wait until office hours, the online form can be used for emergency service.
Phone 01622 410 019 or use the booking form on the contact page. Tell the business you can see wasps at the window, how many and whether there are any outside the building. All technicians are fully insured and qualified. If somebody at home is allergic to wasp stings, mention it when booking so that the booking can be prioritised.
If you are a business owner with a workshop on site, make sure that staff know the building is not to be used until the work is done. A clear message at the start of the day avoids anyone being caught out.
While you wait for the visit
Close the shed door and any other opening. Move anything in the garden that attracts wasps, such as open bins and drinks. Keep children and pets away from the shed, and check that everyone knows to leave it alone.
If a stray wasp comes towards you, remain calm. Standing still or moving slowly away works better than waving your arms. If you are stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack. Call 999 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, breathing difficulty, dizziness or a widespread rash.
Anyone with a known allergy should talk to their GP about their own plan.
Resist the urge to hose the shed or put anything against the window. A calm wait is better.
Cleaning the glass and fixing the frame
After the treatment, the window will probably be dirty. Wait until you are told it is safe, then open the door and clear dead wasps from the sill using gloves and a dustpan. Do not use your bare hands, since a dead wasp can still sting.
Replace cracked glass, fix the frame and, if you like, add fine mesh over the opening to keep insects out in the future. Check the roof, the door and the base as well.
Also ask when you book whether the empty nest can be taken down. It is best removed before you restock the shed.
Once the shed is open again, wash the window inside and out with warm soapy water. It lets in more light, and a clean pane makes it easier to see any wasps that appear next time.
