Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Horden? Here's What to Do

A few minutes of preparation make a loft nest visit quicker and calmer. Here is a plain checklist for the day, from the hatch to the paperwork.

The night before

Preparation can start before the visit day. Make sure you know the appointment time, and put our number and the technician's expected arrival window somewhere visible. If you will not be home, arrange access with a neighbour or key holder, and tell them who is coming.

Keep the loft hatch closed and tell everyone in the house not to use it. If wasps have been entering a particular room, close the door of that room.

On the morning

On the day, run through a short list.

You do not need to go into the loft or do anything near the nest.

Switch off any loud equipment near the landing, such as a radio or a vacuum, so the technician can speak to you easily when they arrive.

When the technician arrives

The technician will introduce themselves and ask where wasps have been seen. Show them the hatch and mention anything you have noticed, such as the side of the house with a stream of wasps. They are fully insured and qualified, and will explain what they plan to do.

If they find a second nest, they will tell you. The price for an additional nest on the same property is £60 extra, compared with £120 for the first.

During the work

Stay away from the hatch and landing while the technician works. If you are worried, go outdoors or to a room at the other end of the house. Listen for any request from the technician, who may call down if something is needed.

Do not go up to look, and do not allow children or pets to wander upstairs. The work is done safely and effectively, and the technician will come down when it is finished.

It helps to know what the technician does not need from you. You do not need to clean the loft, to tidy boxes or to move stored items. You do not need to find the nest or prove that it exists. You do not need to buy anything or to wait with a torch at the hatch. Leave all of that to the visit.

Think about the practical side of the day. If the technician is arriving in the evening or at a weekend, make sure the outside of the house is lit and the front path is clear. If you have a gate or an entry system, tell us how to get in. If there are parking restrictions near the property, mention them when you book.

Think, too, about timing. The visit takes as long as the nest requires, and the technician will not rush. If you have somewhere to be, say so at the start, and arrange for a neighbour or relative to cover access. It is better to say than to have to rush off halfway through.

Safety for the household is the other half of the checklist. Make sure everyone knows the loft is off limits until the technician says otherwise. Children and pets should be in a closed room, away from the landing, for the duration. If anyone has a wasp sting allergy, they should be well away from the hatch, ideally out of the house.

You might also like to prepare a short list of questions for the technician. Some people ask how long to keep the loft closed, whether the empty nest can be taken down and what to look for in the coming days. Write them down while they are fresh in your mind.

For a commercial property, add a few items: tell staff, put a sign on the relevant door, and make sure the person with the keys is present. Check whether any machinery or alarm system covers the roof space.

After the technician leaves, take five minutes to walk round the house with the window open and note anything unusual: wasps still in rooms, marks on the ceiling or noises from above. If anything seems wrong, get in touch with the details while they are fresh.

After they have gone

Ask what to do next. The technician will tell you when the loft is safe to use, how to deal with dead wasps and what to expect over the following days. You can ask whether the empty nest can be taken down. Keep the receipt, and write down the date.

Clear dead wasps from the landing and sills with a vacuum or brush, wearing gloves if you wish. Open windows to air the rooms.

Finally, ask the technician at the visit what the best next step is for you. They may suggest a specific habit, such as checking the hatch seal or glancing at the roof edge in spring. Their advice comes from seeing many roofs, and it is worth hearing.
