Wasp Control for Istead Rise Restaurants, Pubs and Commercial Premises

Residential care homes, nurseries and clinics look after people who may be less able to move away from a wasp, so a nest on the grounds needs prompt, quiet attention.

Why these premises need a careful approach

A care home, nursery or day centre has people who cannot always step aside from a wasp. Residents may be frail or have limited mobility, some may be unable to tell staff they have been stung, and young children react unpredictably. Many such settings have gardens and patios that are used on warm afternoons, which is exactly when wasps are most active.

In Istead Rise, as elsewhere, a nest starts in a sheltered spot from late April, depending on the weather, and by August the colony can hold from 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more. That means an unnoticed nest in May can become a daily hazard by the end of summer, close to doors, windows and seating areas.

The priorities are simple. Keep people away from the nest, keep staff alert to anyone who may be stung, and have the nest treated quickly and quietly, ideally when residents or children are not outside.

Warm, still afternoons are the highest-risk time. Residents are encouraged outside for fresh air, drinks are served, and the first wasps of the day are most active between late morning and mid-afternoon. A sensible approach is to hold garden activities in the cooler early morning or in a part of the grounds that is far from any suspected entrance, until the treatment has been done.

What staff can look out for

Care staff and nursery workers already do regular checks, so wasps can be added to the list. A walk around the outside of the building at the start of each shift, noting any increase in wasps, is usually enough.

Watch for:

Keep a simple record of what you see, with times and positions. If wasps are entering the building, keep windows closed on that side and tell the manager.

Protecting residents and children in the meantime

Move seating and activities away from the nest, and close off the area with a barrier or sign. Keep drinks and food covered when outdoors, and bring sweet items back inside as soon as people have finished. Clear plates promptly, and keep bins lidded and away from seating.

Staff should be aware of anyone with a known allergy to wasp stings. If someone with an allergy is stung, treat it as an emergency if there are signs of a serious reaction: swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash. In that case, call 999. People with known allergies should speak to their GP about their own plan.

Do not use household sprays near residents or children. They are not designed for use around vulnerable people, and a spray will not deal with the nest.

A treatment that is quiet and well timed

Wasp Exterminator Kent treats nests at care homes, nurseries, schools, offices and homes. A single nest is priced at £120 in total, and it comes with one visit guaranteed, while a second nest at the same address is £60 more. A call-out charge is never added, and nothing extra is added for the location or the time.

We work seven days a week, with same-day service, and evening and weekend appointments are available. This means a visit can take place when residents are indoors or children have gone home. Our technicians are fully insured and qualified, and the method is safe and effective.

Please tell us about any safety rules, sign-in procedures or checks which the technician must follow. If a manager must be present, let us know the time that suits. Ask at booking whether the empty nest can be taken down once it has been treated.

Who decides and who books

In larger organisations, the decision often sits with the registered manager, the owner or the estates team. If the building is leased, the landlord may be responsible for the treatment, but that depends on the lease, which we cannot advise on. Do not delay while the question is resolved. A nest left in place grows.

Agree beforehand who can approve a same-day booking, so that a nest found on a Friday afternoon is not left until Monday. Make sure the on-call manager has the contact details.

Keep a note of the date, the area and the work carried out in the premises log, and let the night staff know so that they are not surprised by a changed route to the garden.

Night staff and weekend teams need the same information as the day team. A short entry in the handover record, saying where the nest is and when treatment is booked, makes sure no one wheels a chair or a pushchair towards the affected corner by accident. Visitors and relatives should be told as well, as they often take loved ones out into the garden without checking with anyone.

If the nest is near a window that residents like to sit beside, consider moving the chairs for a few days.

How to book

Have the address to hand, the position of the nest if known, the times when the garden is empty and a contact who can meet the technician. Tell us about any allergy among residents, children or staff, so the visit can be prioritised.

You can reach us on 01622 410 019, or use the booking form on the contact page, and the form is the quickest route for an emergency out of hours.

After treatment, keep the area closed until the technician confirms it is fine. Check the garden over the next few days, and report any fresh activity.
