Do Wasps Return to the Same Nest Every Year? A Guide for Kilndown Gardens

A wasp on the kitchen window in September feels like an invasion, but it usually tells you less about a nest than you might think.

A wasp on the window

Few things unsettle a household more than finding wasps indoors. One crawling up the glass, another circling the light, a third drowning in a glass of juice. It is natural to jump to the conclusion that a nest has been built in the house, and that it is somehow the old one coming back.

The truth is usually less dramatic. Wasps wander into houses for the same reasons as everything else: an open window, a door left ajar, the smell of food. Most are workers that have come from a nest somewhere else.

Still, there are situations where wasps indoors do mean a nest in the building, and it helps to tell them apart.

Late summer in particular brings more visitors indoors. As the colony ends its cycle, wasps are drawn to anything sugary, and they are less cautious than in spring. They will come through a gap that is hardly wider than a pencil.

One wasp or many

A single wasp in a room, especially in late summer, is most likely a visitor. It came in through an open window or door and cannot find its way out. It is not a sign of anything inside the house.

Regular wasps in the same room, day after day, especially in spring or early summer, are different. If they appear near a wall, a ceiling light, a fireplace or a vent, or if you find dead ones on the sill every morning, the likely source is a nest within the structure.

The old nest from last year is not responsible. The colony that built it died in autumn. A new nest, built this season, is the likely cause.

Time of year is the most helpful guide. A wasp or two inside in September is common and usually harmless. The same wasps indoors in May, from a source you cannot find, are more suspicious, because that is when new nests are being built.

One more clue is the direction of travel. Wasps leaving a room towards the window are usually just trying to get out, while wasps arriving from a wall or ceiling are coming from somewhere else.

Dealing with a visitor

For a lone wasp, patience is best.

  1. Open the window as wide as it goes, and close the room’s other doors.
  2. Turn off any light you were using, and let the window be the brightest thing in the room.
  3. Give it time. A wasp usually finds its way out.
  4. If it settles, cover it with a glass and slide a card underneath, then release it outside.

Avoid swatting. A swat that misses leaves an angry wasp in the room, and a panicked one is more likely to sting.

If there are small children in the room, keep calm and avoid rushing, as sudden movement can alarm the wasp. Moving the child out and closing the door is easier than catching the insect.

If you have a conservatory or a room with a large window, you may find that wasps collect there. They fly towards the light and become trapped. A window left open in the afternoon often solves it.

Closing the routes in

Many indoor visits can be avoided with small changes.

These steps help throughout the season, and they cost little. They also make it easier to notice when wasps are appearing from a particular direction.

Put a note of which windows were open when wasps came in. Over time, you will see a pattern, and you can deal with it by closing or screening that opening.

Mesh over trickle vents and a brush strip at the bottom of external doors are small jobs that a handyperson can do in an hour. The cost is modest, and the improvement lasts for many seasons.

When indoor wasps point to a nest

If wasps keep appearing in one room, move the household out of it. Close the door. Do not search for the nest, and do not spray or tap on the walls. Wasps in the walls will respond to disturbance.

Note when and where they appear: the time of day, the part of the room, whether they come from a vent, a light fitting or the window frame. That information helps the technician considerably.

Be wary of any spray or home remedy used on a wasp indoors, since it only produces more agitated insects and a nuisance in the room. A calm, patient exit is better.

Do not shut a wasp in a room overnight and hope it will leave. It will tire and hide, and you may find it again in the morning when you least expect.

Arranging help

For a nest that is connected to wasps indoors, we offer a fixed £120 per nest, and an additional nest on the same property is £60 extra. There is no call-out charge. You will be visited by a fully insured and qualified technician, and the price includes one visit guaranteed.

Ring 01622 410 019, or fill in the booking form at /contact-us/. We are open seven days a week, with same-day service for Kilndown and the nearby villages, and with evening and weekend appointments. For anyone in the household who is allergic to stings, say so on booking.

A clear note about where and when the wasps appear lets us decide how urgent the visit is and prepare for it.

Please do not ignore regular wasps in the same room. If more appear each day, the nest is growing, and the sooner it is treated the better.

Frequently asked questions

Why do wasps come into my house in September?
They are drawn by food and sugar, and by open windows. Most are workers from a nest elsewhere, at the end of their season.
Does a wasp indoors mean there is a nest in my house?
Not by itself. A few wasps over several days from the same direction are a stronger sign.
Is it safe to swat a wasp indoors?
It is better not to. Swatting may provoke a sting. Use a glass and card, or open a window and let it leave.
