Wasp Nests Under Roof Tiles – A Common Problem for Langton Green Homes

Sometimes more than one nest turns up on a single building. This guide explains how that happens, how to spot it and how the pricing works.

How a roof can end up with two nests

A building with several sheltered gaps can attract more than one colony. If the first nest is built at one end of the roof, a second colony may start at the other end, or the same gap may serve two nests in different spaces.

Neither colony is aware of the other, and each will build in its own way. The result is two entry points, sometimes close together and sometimes on different sides of the building.

Householders in Langton Green who find a second entrance are not unlucky; it is a recognised pattern wherever a roof has several weak spots.

Larger properties and those with extensions, outbuildings or dormer roofs offer more places to nest, so a second colony is more plausible there. It does not mean anything is wrong with the building.

Is it one nest or two?

This is the question that matters, because the price depends on the number of nests. The wasp traffic can look like two separate colonies when it is really one, and the reverse is also possible.

You cannot tell for sure from the ground. The technician makes the final decision when they inspect the roof.

Timing can offer a clue too. Two nests that appear at different times, one in May and the other in July, are clearly separate. Nests that appear together are harder to distinguish.

A building with shared roof timbers, such as an extension joined to the main house, can hold a nest in either part. Say which part you think is affected.

Mapping what you see

Stand well back and watch the roof. For each place where wasps enter, note which side of the building it is on, the approximate height, and whether it is near a feature such as a chimney, a gable or a porch.

Take a photograph of each spot from a distance. If you can, label them in your phone as spot one and spot two. This lets you describe the layout clearly when you ring.

Do not walk closer to compare. Each entry point has defending wasps near it, and moving between them can draw attention.

A rough sketch of the building, with an X for each entry and a note of the direction the wasps fly, is more than most callers can offer, and it helps.

Why neither gap should be sealed

With two nests, the temptation to block at least one is stronger. It seems like a way to halve the problem. In fact it moves the problem: wasps blocked at one gap look for the next exit, and may head for the second gap or for the house.

A ladder is no more advisable. With two colonies, you are exposed to a bigger risk if you disturb either of them, and the disturbance can spread along the roof timbers.

Wait for the technician, who is fully insured and qualified, and let them treat each nest. Keep windows shut on both sides of the affected roof.

If you notice wasps indoors, close the doors of the rooms on that side of the house and keep a record of where they appear.

If wasps do start to appear in a room, keep calm, close the door and put a note on it for the family. Open a window if you can do it without a wasp in the way, and ring the office.

How the pricing works for two nests

The fee for one nest is a fixed £120 per nest, with no hidden fees. An additional nest on the same property is £60 extra. That means a roof with two nests costs £120 plus £60 extra, with no call-out charge on top.

The extra nest only applies on the same property. The technician will work out how many nests there are on the day, and the quote is clear from the start. No extras are added for height, access or the time of day.

The price graphic says one visit guaranteed, which applies to the treatment as a whole.

Householders sometimes worry that a second nest is the start of a bigger infestation. It is not. Nests do not multiply by themselves; each begins on its own in spring.

Householders sometimes ask whether they can book for one nest now and add the second later. It is simpler to describe everything at once, because a single visit can cover both.

Booking and what happens afterwards

Ring 01622 410 019 or use the online form on the contact page, and tell the office you think there may be two entrances. They can plan the visit accordingly. The business is open seven days a week with same-day service and evening and weekend slots, and the form handles emergencies when the office is closed.

Homes and businesses are treated alike. If anyone is allergic to wasp stings, say so when booking so it can be prioritised. For general first aid, wash a sting, remove it if visible and use a cold pack, and call 999 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness, breathing difficulty or a widespread rash.

After the visit, a few wasps may return to the old entries. Once things quiet down, get both gaps repaired. Ask the technician if the empty nests can be taken down.

Keep the total in mind when you plan: it is a fixed sum, known in advance, and nothing more is added if a technician has to reach an awkward spot.

Frequently asked questions

What if I only see one entrance but the technician finds two?
The second nest is charged at £60 extra. The technician will explain what they found and where.
Could two entrances lead to a single nest?
Yes. A large nest sometimes has more than one exit. The technician decides how many nests there are.
Does the second nest need a separate booking?
No. Tell the office about both entrances when you book, and the visit can cover them together.
