Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Maidstone? Here's What to Do

A low, constant hum from above the bedroom ceiling is often the first sign of a loft wasp nest, and a calm, quiet response keeps everyone safe until the technician arrives.

Is that humming really wasps?

Have you started hearing a faint hum from the ceiling, somewhere above the landing or a bedroom? Many people put it down to a pipe, the boiler or the wind. In summer, a steady buzzing that grows louder on warm afternoons is a strong hint that a wasp colony has set up in the roof space.

Wasps start building in late April, depending on the weather, and the colony keeps growing until it peaks in August. By then a nest can hold anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more, so the sound builds gradually. That is why the noise often seems to arrive out of nowhere in July or August, even though the nest has been there for months.

The sound is usually described as a dry, papery rustle with a constant buzz over the top. It tends to be loudest in the middle of the day, when workers are coming and going, and quieter in the cool of the early morning.

Other clues that back it up

A hum on its own can have other causes, so look for supporting signs before you decide. You do not need to go into the loft to do this, and you should not.

If you can tick two or more of these, assume you have a nest. If you are unsure, say what you are hearing when you contact us and the technician can talk it through with you before booking.

What to do while you wait

The most useful thing you can do is nothing dramatic. Keep the loft hatch shut, and keep everyone, including pets, out of the roof space. Do not bang on the ceiling to check, because vibration can agitate the colony.

If a few wasps are getting into rooms, open a window in that room and let them leave, then keep the door to that room closed. Do not seal up any gaps you can see outdoors. Wasps use those holes as their way in and out, and if you block them the insects will look for another route, which is often through the ceiling and into your living space.

Please do not spray the ceiling, poke the hatch or burn anything. A disturbed nest can produce a swarm of stinging wasps within seconds, and the loft is a poor place to be caught in one.

Why they pick your roof space

A loft ticks every box a founding wasp looks for in spring: it is dry, sheltered, undisturbed and usually warm. A small gap in the eaves, a loose bit of fascia or a gap where a pipe passes through is enough to let a founding insect in.

Once inside, the wasps chew wood fibre and build the grey, papery nest. That material is why nests often look like layers of crumpled paper. A loft with stored items or a quiet corner gives the colony space to expand throughout the summer.

Staying safe in the meantime

Sound is only half the story, because a nest you can hear is also a nest that can be disturbed. Heavy footsteps on the landing, a vacuum cleaner running under the hatch or a loud radio near the loft wall will not necessarily upset the wasps, but sudden knocks and vibrations can. Try to keep the area under the roof space quiet and calm until the visit.

If you have young children, explain in simple terms that the loft is out of bounds for now. Pets are worth thinking about as well; a dog that fixates on the ceiling and barks is likely to be able to hear something you cannot, so keep it away from that room if you can.

In the unlikely event that you are stung, move away from the area first. Wash the sting with soap and water, take out the sting if you can see it, and hold a cold pack against the spot. Anyone with swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a spreading rash should call 999 straight away. People who know they are allergic should speak to their GP about what is right for them, and should mention the allergy when they book with us.

Most householders find that a short, practical routine gets them through the wait comfortably: shut the hatch, open a window in any room with a stray wasp, keep the loft quiet and make the call.

What happens at the visit

When you book, our technician arranges a time that suits you. We are open seven days a week, offer same-day service where we can, and have evening and weekend appointments. There is no call-out charge. Treating a nest costs a fixed £120 per nest, and a second nest on the same property is £60 extra, with one visit guaranteed.

The technician is fully insured and qualified, and handles the nest safely and effectively. Tell them where you have heard or seen activity so they can go straight to the right part of the roof space. You can ask at booking whether the empty nest can be taken down afterwards.

Afterwards you may find some dead wasps near the hatch or in the room below. Sweep or vacuum them up with the room well ventilated, and wear gloves if you prefer. Stragglers can take a little while to stop appearing as the last foragers come home to a nest that is no longer active.

To book, phone 01622 410 019 or use the online form on the contact page. If it is outside normal hours, the form can be used for an emergency request. Domestic and commercial properties are both covered, and the technician works across Maidstone and the surrounding villages.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can someone come out to a loft nest in Maidstone?
We offer same-day service and are open seven days a week, with evening and weekend appointments available. Contact us and we will arrange the earliest slot we can.
Will the buzzing stop straight after treatment?
The noise should fade once the nest is treated, though a few returning wasps may linger briefly. If you still hear activity after that, let us know.
Is it safe to listen at the loft hatch?
It is best not to. Stay out of the loft and away from the hatch, because a disturbed nest can send out stinging wasps quickly.
