Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Queenborough? Here's What to Do

Wasps need a way in. Knowing where they usually find one helps you spot a nest early and avoid the mistake of blocking a gap while it is in use.

The small gaps that count

A wasp needs very little room. A gap the width of a pencil is enough, and many buildings have several without anyone knowing. Over the years, timber shrinks, mortar crumbles, seals perish and fixings loosen. The result is a house that looks sound but has dozens of tiny openings around the roof.

When a wasp finds one that leads to a dry, sheltered space, it will investigate. If conditions suit, it will start a nest. That is the origin of most loft colonies: a gap, a founding insect and a quiet interior.

If you have recently had work done on the roof, such as a new fascia or replaced tiles, check that it was finished neatly. Workmen sometimes leave small gaps around joints, and new timber can shrink as it dries.

Common entry points

There are certain places that turn up again and again.

A pair of binoculars on a calm day will show most of these from the ground. Do not climb up to look.

A short walk round the building with a notebook is useful. Write down any gaps that look worth a closer look, and photograph them from a distance. A builder can use your notes to give a clearer quote.

Do not block an active entrance

This is the most important point. If wasps are using a gap, closing it does not remove the nest. It traps the wasps inside, and they will look for another exit, which could be a ceiling light, a hatch edge or a wall cavity into your rooms. The result is usually more wasps indoors, not fewer.

Fillers, foam and tape should wait until the nest has been treated. After that, a builder can advise what is worth sealing and what is not.

If a gap is high, do not climb a ladder to check it. A fall is a far greater risk than a wasp. The best approach is a pair of binoculars from the ground.

Sheppey's coastal air and building materials

Seaside and exposed locations can be hard on buildings, since salt, wind and rain wear down paint, seals and timber. We do not make claims about local conditions, but in general any building that is regularly exposed to the weather needs its roof edge checked from time to time. Queenborough is on the Isle of Sheppey, and the technician covers the area and nearby villages.

Regular maintenance helps, but it does not make a house wasp-proof. Even well-kept buildings are visited by founding wasps.

Be patient. Wasp numbers around a gap can rise and fall with the weather and the time of day. Try several times before drawing conclusions.

Treatment and cost

The visit itself is simple. The technician identifies the entrance, reaches the roof space and treats the nest. The price is a fixed £120 per nest, with £60 for an additional nest on the same property, and no call-out charge. With one visit guaranteed, the technician arrives fully insured and qualified.

The service runs all week including Saturdays and Sundays, and evening appointments and same-day visits are offered. Phone 01622 410 019 or use the form on the contact page, which also takes emergency requests out of hours. We cover homes and commercial premises.

If you cannot see the entrance, the technician may still find it from the loft side. Do not worry if you have no clear idea where it is.

One more point about entry points is that wasps seldom use a single gap. A busy nest may have a main entrance at the roof edge and one or two smaller routes elsewhere, including down into the house. If you see wasps indoors, there is often an outdoor entrance as well, and the technician will look for both.

Because of this, a builder's repair after treatment should look at the whole roofline, not just the gap that was obviously in use. Ask for a general check of fascia, soffit, vents and tile edges, and keep the report with your house papers.

If you rent or manage a building, send the builder's findings to the landlord or agent, who can decide what to do. Whether the work is the tenant's or the owner's responsibility depends on the tenancy agreement, so check it.

Gaps are not always where you expect. Wasps have been known to use the space between a roof and a chimney flashing, the gap behind a satellite dish bracket or the opening where an extractor vent leaves the wall. If you spot wasps entering anything that looks like a fitting rather than a defect, mention it when you call.

Remember too that a hole made by wasps themselves, for instance by chewing at a soft fascia board, can be widened over a season. A small hole in May can be large enough for a stream of wasps by August. Early attention to soft or flaking timber is a sensible habit for any building.

Repairs once it is over

When the technician has confirmed that the nest is dealt with, speak to a builder about the entry point. They can say whether the gap should be sealed, and how. It is sensible to do this outside the main wasp season, in autumn or winter, when no colony is active.

Clear dead wasps from the loft and landing, and ask at booking whether the empty nest can be taken down. A tidy, sound roof edge is the best defence you have, though no repair offers a complete guarantee.

Add a note in your diary for next April, to take a look at the roof edge once the weather warms.

Frequently asked questions

Should I seal the gap where the wasps go in?
Not while the nest is active. Wait until it has been treated, then ask a builder for advice.
Can wasps get in through airbricks in Queenborough?
They can if a vent is damaged or has wide openings. A builder can advise on suitable covers.
Will repairs stop wasps coming back?
They reduce the chances but cannot prevent a new nest entirely.
