Wasp Nests Under Roof Tiles – A Common Problem for Rainham Homes

Sometimes a roof nest is first noticed from inside the house, through a faint sound or a mark on the ceiling. This guide explains what those clues can mean and what to do.

When the signs show up indoors

Most roof nests are first noticed outside, but not all. A nest built against the underside of the tiles can sit directly above a bedroom or landing, with only a layer of insulation and plasterboard between it and the room.

If that is your situation, the first hint may be a sound, a mark or a wasp wandering across a ceiling. These signs are easy to put down to something else, so it helps to know what you are looking at.

Rainham householders who spot any of the following in warm months should treat the possibility of a nest seriously.

It is worth remembering that wasps are active mainly during the day and warm months. Sounds that appear in July and fade at night are far more likely to be wasps than, for instance, a noise that is loudest after dark.

Sounds, marks and the odd wasp

None of these proves a nest is there. Together, and in the right season, they point strongly to one.

The sound is often more obvious at the quietest time of the day, such as early in the morning or in the evening.

Be careful not to confuse a nest with a leak. A damp patch after rain that dries out again is probably water. A mark that keeps growing in dry weather, along with wasps and noise, points elsewhere.

What to do inside the house

Do not press or knock on the ceiling to find out. That is a quick way to provoke the colony, and a damaged plasterboard patch is easy to break through. Do not use an aerosol on any wasp that wanders in either, since that can attract others.

Instead, keep the room closed and quiet. If wasps are in the room, leave the door shut and put a rolled towel at the bottom to keep them in. Open the windows only if you can do so without a wasp reaching you, and let strays out.

Keep children and pets away from that room until the nest has been treated, and avoid sleeping there if wasps have been appearing.

If a wasp lands on you indoors, stay still for a moment, then guide it to a window with a card or a cup rather than swatting. A crushed wasp can release a scent that draws others.

Why this is a job for the roof, not the ceiling

It is tempting to cut a small opening in the ceiling, look in and deal with the nest from the room. That puts the colony and a lot of angry wasps right where you stand. It is not safe, and the damage to the ceiling would then need to be repaired.

The nest is dealt with by a technician who is fully insured and qualified, using the access that suits the job. Often that means work from outside, at roof level, and it is no job for a ladder in the hands of a householder.

Do not seal the roof gap in an attempt to starve the nest of access. A blocked exit makes wasps search for another one, and the ceiling is the next most likely route.

There is another reason to keep your hands off the ceiling. Plasterboard stained by a nest can be soft, and pressing it may bring part of it down, along with insulation and any wasps behind.

Telling the office what you have noticed

When you ring, describe the signs in order: what you noticed, in which room, and what time of day it is strongest. If you also know where the wasps go in outside, say so. These details let the booking be planned properly.

Mention any allergy at this point. Anyone who is allergic to stings, or has a family member who is, should say so so that the booking can be prioritised. People with a known allergy should also speak to their GP.

If someone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if you can see it and use a cold pack. Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash should be treated as an emergency.

When the technician attends, they may want to see the room as well as the outside. Make sure the path to the room is clear, move any valuables away from the ceiling, and keep the door closed until they arrive.

The price, booking and afterwards

A nest costs a fixed £120 per nest to treat, with a second nest on the same property at £60 extra. There is no call-out charge, and nothing is added for the time of day. The price graphic says one visit is guaranteed.

Wasp Exterminator Kent is open seven days a week, offers same-day service and has evening and weekend appointments. You can call 01622 410 019, or use the online form for out-of-hours emergencies.

Once the nest has been treated, any stain on the ceiling will not vanish by itself. A decorator can seal and repaint it, but only after the area is dry. Whether the empty nest can come down is something to raise with the technician.

It is also sensible to keep the loft hatch, if you have one, firmly shut. Do not go into the loft to look. The nest could be a short distance from where you would be standing.

Frequently asked questions

Can a nest above my ceiling make the plaster fall?
Concerns about staining are more common than collapse. If a ceiling looks damaged, keep clear of it and have it checked by a builder after the nest is treated.
Is it normal to see one wasp indoors in summer?
One stray can come in through an open window. If you keep finding them in a closed room, especially under the ceiling, a nest above is a real possibility.
Should I stay out of the room until the visit?
It is wise to keep the room closed, with children and pets elsewhere, until the nest has been dealt with.
