Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Rough Common
Knowing what to expect on the day makes a wasp nest visit far less stressful, from who arrives to what you should do while the work is carried out.
Before the visit
When you book, the office will ask where the nest is, how high, and how to get to it. They will also want your address and a contact number, and to know about any sting allergy in the household. Answer as best you can. If you are unsure of something, say so.
On the day, make sure someone can let the technician in or direct them to the right wall. If gates are locked, say so beforehand. Move cars, bikes and garden furniture away from beneath the roof edge, if you can do it safely without going near the nest.
It is worth saying that the vast majority of visits go smoothly. The technician has done this many times, and what looks dramatic from the house is routine for them. Even so, careful preparation by the householder makes things go faster.
It also helps to have your questions ready. Write them down while you wait: whether the empty nest can be taken down, how soon the gap can be repaired, whether anything else around the property needs attention. The visit is short, and a written list means nothing is forgotten.
When the technician arrives
The technician is fully insured and qualified, and will introduce themselves, ask about what you have seen and look at the roof edge from the ground. They may ask you to point out where the wasps go in. It helps to have your photographs ready to show.
They will decide how to reach the entrance and set up accordingly. This is their job, and you do not need to help with the equipment. Please stand back and let them work.
If you have a particular worry, such as a sting allergy, a nervous pet or an elderly relative in the house, mention it when the technician arrives as well as when you book. They can adapt where they work and how long you need to stay indoors.
The first conversation at the door is the most useful moment of the visit. Tell the technician about anything that has changed since you booked: more wasps, a new entrance, wasps indoors. They can adjust their plan on the spot.
What you should do while they work
Go indoors and keep the windows near the roof edge closed. Bring children and pets inside, and keep them away from the affected wall. Stay out of the garden until you are told it is safe.
- Keep doors on the affected side closed.
- Do not stand beneath the roof edge to watch.
- Keep the phone nearby in case the technician needs to reach you.
- Do not use power tools or play loud music near the wall.
- Wait for the technician to tell you that it is safe to go out.
Parking is a small but real point. A technician needs somewhere safe to leave the vehicle and to carry equipment to the wall. If your drive is narrow, or parking is restricted nearby, tell the office in advance.
There is no need to buy or prepare anything. You do not have to clear the whole garden or move large objects, just keep the area beneath the roof edge free so the technician can set up and move about.
After the treatment
The nest is treated so that it is no longer active. A few wasps may still be seen around the entrance for a little while, as foragers come back to find the nest quiet. This is normal, but keep clear until they have settled.
The technician can tell you what to expect over the next day or two. If you have questions about the empty nest, ask them at this point, including whether it can be taken down.
Neighbours may notice the visit, and some will be curious. A quick word beforehand, particularly if the nest is close to a shared boundary, avoids anyone walking into the area at the wrong moment.
If the nest is on a business premises, tell staff beforehand and arrange a quiet time for the work, if possible. Evening and weekend appointments help here. Close the affected entrance for the duration of the visit.
Payment and what is included
Treatment is a fixed £120 per nest, with no call-out charge, and the price graphic says one visit guaranteed. If there is another nest on the same property, it is £60 extra. The price does not change with the time of day or the location.
The business is open seven days a week and offers same-day service, with evening and weekend appointments. Both domestic and commercial customers are covered.
Do not feel you have to supervise from the garden. The technician will not mind if you stay indoors, and some prefer it. If you do want to see, a window at a safe distance is the right place.
After the visit, take a moment to look at the area with the technician and agree what needs repairing. They cannot advise on the building work itself, but they can tell you where the entrance was, which is exactly what a repairer needs to know.
