Wasp Nest Treatment in Southborough – Why Early Action Matters

When a nest sits on a party wall or boundary, talking to the neighbour early makes treatment quicker and keeps both gardens safe.

A nest that belongs to two gardens

Wasps do not recognise boundaries. A nest in a shared wall, a boundary hedge or a fence line may be visible from your side while the entrance is on the neighbour's, or vice versa. It affects both households, but each may think the other has noticed.

Wasps begin nesting from late April, depending on the weather. In Southborough, next to Tunbridge Wells, as in any area with homes close together, the practical question is who notices first and who speaks up. The earlier a conversation happens, the easier the nest is to deal with.

It also helps to know that a nest does not need to be on your property to bother you. Wasps forage widely, so a nest two gardens along can still send workers to your patio. The fact that you can see wasps does not prove the nest is yours. Looking at the flight line from a safe point helps to work out which side it is on.

Having the conversation

Speaking to a neighbour about a wasp nest does not need to be awkward. It is a shared problem, and most people are glad to be told. You might say that you have noticed wasps going in and out near the boundary and wondered whether they have seen it too. Offer to point out the spot from your side, from a safe distance, and suggest arranging treatment together.

A few useful points:

If the conversation does not go well, or the neighbour is away, you can still ring us and describe the situation. We will explain what we can and cannot do without access to the other property.

A written note can help if the neighbour is not at home. Keep it short and friendly, include your phone number and avoid any suggestion of blame. Wasps are nobody's fault.

What if the entrance is on their side?

It is common for the entrance to be in the neighbour's roof, hedge or garden while the wasps come into yours. In that case we can only treat with the permission of the owner of the property where the nest is. Whether and how costs are shared between neighbours is for you to agree. We would only say that a quick agreement is better than a long one, because the colony grows with every week.

The colony peaks in August with anything from 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps. Delay causes risk on both sides of the fence, and the price remains a fixed £120 per nest, so a prompt decision is sensible for both.

Be realistic about timing. A neighbour who is on holiday, or a landlord who lives elsewhere, can slow things down. While you wait, keep your own household clear of the area. If you are a tenant, let your landlord or managing agent know promptly so that the process starts.

Practical points for a shared visit

If the technician has to cross both gardens, access should be agreed in advance. Gates should be unlocked, dogs put away and children kept inside. If the nest is on a shared wall in a terrace, tell the other residents in the row as well, since they may notice wasps too.

For tenants and landlords, responsibility for arranging treatment depends on the tenancy agreement, so check it. We would rather not give legal advice. What we can say is that the sooner someone books, the smaller the nest is likely to be.

Each additional nest on the property is priced at £60 per nest.

Gardens that are close together share more than a fence. They share the wasps that forage over them, the smell of food at a barbecue and the sound of a mower that can upset a nest. If you are planning noisy garden work near the boundary, a word with your neighbour about the nest comes first.

If you are not certain whose side the nest is on, a photo from your garden that shows the line of the wasps against the fence or wall is often enough for us to advise.

Keeping safe in the meantime

While arrangements are made, keep your distance from the boundary. Close windows on that side of the house, cover food and drink outdoors and keep children and pets away. Tell any visitors, gardeners or delivery people that there is a nest near the fence so that they do not stray towards it.

If someone is stung, wash the area with soap and water, remove the sting if you can see it and use a cold pack. Call 999 if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash.

Do not leave notes on a neighbour's door telling them to go and look at the nest. A calm word is better.

Booking

Call 01622 410 019 or fill in the booking form on the contact page. We work seven days a week with same-day service offered where possible. Another nest at the same address is priced at £60 per nest. Domestic and commercial customers are both welcome. Technicians are fully insured and qualified, and domestic and commercial customers are welcome. If anyone at either property is allergic to wasp stings, mention it when booking.

Where the nest is in a shared structure, such as a party wall, the technician will talk through what is possible when they arrive. Please have the neighbour's contact details handy if you can.
