Wasp Nest in a Hedge or Bush – What Thanington Without Garden Owners Should Know

Sound is often the first sign of a nest in a hedge, and the evening is the best time both to listen and to arrange a treatment.

Hearing before seeing

A wasp nest in a thick hedge may be impossible to see, but it is rarely silent. A colony of thousands of insects produces a steady low hum, as wasps fan their wings to cool the nest and move in and out. On a still day or evening, that sound can carry several metres.

Listening is a good method because it needs no approach. You can do it from a path or the patio, on an ordinary evening, without disturbing anything. By August a nest may hold from 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more, and the hum is correspondingly easy to detect.

How to listen properly

Choose a quiet time, switch off nearby noise and be patient.

Do not put your ear to the hedge. A hum you can hear from a metre is more than close enough.

A small child or a pet cannot be asked to keep quiet or stand still, so on an evening when you are listening, bring them indoors first and listen alone or with another adult. Keep the dog on a lead if it must come out. A wasp nest is not a place for curiosity.

Once you have heard the hum, take a mental note of where you were standing and what was nearby, such as a post, a gate or a tree. In the morning, in daylight, you can find the same position and look for the traffic. Combining the two is the surest way to find where the entrance is.

Why evening matters

In the evening, most of the workers have returned. The nest is full and the guards are alert, so it is a poor time to disturb it, but a very good time to listen. Wasps are less likely to follow you in cool, fading light, though you should still keep your distance.

It is also a good time to arrange treatment. Evening appointments are available, so you do not have to take time off work or keep children out of the garden during the day. The nest is full and the visit can be completed in a single go.

Evening appointments are useful for another reason: the hedge is usually quieter, the household is at home and the neighbours are less likely to be in the garden. If you want the visit to be discreet, an evening slot is ideal.

Keep the household calm and the garden quiet on the evening you are listening. Loud music, shouting children and slamming doors near the hedge all add vibration and noise, and a quiet garden is both a better place to listen and a safer one while you wait for the technician.

Other noises that can mislead

Not every hum in a hedge is a wasp nest.

If you have both sound and traffic at the same spot, you almost certainly have a nest. If you have sound without traffic, wait and listen again the next day.

If you hear a hum but see no wasps, try again the next day at a different time. Occasionally the sound comes from a nest behind a wall or in a neighbouring garden, and the hedge only passes it on.

If you are on the phone at the time of the booking and the hum is audible, hold the phone out so we can hear it. It may sound odd, but a few seconds of buzzing tells the technician a good deal about the size of the colony and how close you are to it. Do not walk towards the hedge to do so.

Treatment and booking

A fully insured, qualified technician carries out the treatment in one visit without you needing to go near it. The price is fixed at £120 per nest, with £60 for an additional nest on the same property, and there is no extra for an evening appointment. There is no call-out charge. We are open seven days a week and offer same-day service.

Phone 01622 410 019 or use the booking form on the contact page, including for emergency requests outside normal hours. Tell us what you heard and where, and mention any allergies at home so the booking can be prioritised.

If the hum is coming from a place that you cannot reach, such as a tall hedge on a bank, say so when you ring. The technician needs to know about slopes, steps and gates so that they can plan the approach.

Afterwards

Listen again after the visit, from the same spot. You should notice the hum has gone. A few stray wasps for a day or two is normal. If the sound persists, tell us. In spring, from late April, a quiet walk along the hedge in the evening is a good way to catch a new nest early.

Make a point of listening again in spring. From late April, a new nest is small and quiet, so you may need to stand still for a minute to notice it. Catching it then makes everything easier and cheaper for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hear a nest from inside the house?
Occasionally, if it is near a window, but it is easier to hear outside. Do not open windows close to a suspected nest.
Is an evening visit more expensive?
No. The price is fixed at £120 per nest whatever the time of day.
Will the nest still be active in the evening?
Yes, and that is a good thing for treatment because most of the colony is at home.
