Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Tilbury? Here's What to Do
Evening is when many people first notice a loft nest, as wasps inside the house head for the lamp. Here is why, and what to do before the technician comes.
Why the evening shows it up
During the day, the house is busy and bright, and a stray wasp might go unnoticed. In the evening, when the lights go on, wasps that have drifted in from the loft head for them, circling shades and dropping onto tables. A quiet room suddenly seems full of buzzing.
Dusk is also when foragers return to the nest, and any that have wandered indoors become more active as they search for light and warmth. So the first sighting of a problem often happens at the end of the day.
Insects see differently from people, and bright, warm light confuses their navigation. A wasp that has found its way into a lit room will keep circling it rather than finding the exit. This is why a room with a ceiling light can fill up over an evening.
Handling the room at night
A calm approach is best.
- Do not panic or flap at the wasps.
- Turn off the main light and use a lamp near a window.
- Open the window and leave the room for a while.
- Close the door so that wasps do not spread.
- Do not use fly spray, which can turn them aggressive.
- Check the bed and clothing before use.
If you need to sleep in the room, shake out the covers and inspect the pillow.
If you have young children going to bed, plan ahead. Check the room before bedtime and close the door. If wasps are about, move the bed for the night.
Where they come from
If wasps keep coming in the evening, trace the likely route in the morning. Look at the ceiling around the light, at the hatch and at any gaps around pipes. Do not open or poke anything. A line of wasps near the same spot each evening points to a gap above.
Outside, look at the roofline in the afternoon sun for a stream of wasps entering a gap. Together with the indoor pattern, this is almost conclusive.
Do not stand on a chair to look at the light fitting. Not only is it unsafe but you could knock the shade and trigger a rush of wasps.
Leaving the lights on or off
Wasps are attracted to light, so a lit room draws them from the ceiling gap. Keeping a lamp on at one side of the room, with other lights off, can be a way to guide them to a window. Switching off light fittings that are close to the gap helps too.
Avoid leaving windows open at night with the lights on, since that will draw more wasps from outside.
Note any wasps in the bathroom or on the stairs, where lights are on at night. These are signs of additional routes.

If you are alone in the house at night and anxious, it is fine to sleep elsewhere. The wasps will not hunt for you, but being comfortable matters.
Nighttime also changes how people react. A single wasp in a dark room can feel more threatening than in daylight, because you cannot see where it is. Resist the urge to swing a hand or a newspaper. A still person is seldom stung; a flailing one often is. Move away slowly, turn on a lamp somewhere else and let the wasp follow the light.
If a wasp lands on you, stay as calm as you can and let it fly off. Brushing it away roughly is how most stings happen. If you do get stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack, and call 999 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash.
A useful habit is to keep a torch and a glass jar and card near the bedroom door, if you wish to catch and release stray wasps. It is not necessary, but some people feel more in control with a plan.
Think about the ceiling edges too. Dusk wasps often rest on the top of curtain rails or the corners of the ceiling, where warm air collects, and then drop down when disturbed. Look up before you sit or lie down in a room where wasps have been seen.
If you share the house with others, agree on a simple signal for wasps, such as calling out and leaving the room, so that nobody panics. Children respond well to a plan they have practised.
The morning after
Check the room for wasps on the ceiling, windows and curtains. Clear them as above. Keep the hatch closed and avoid the landing until the visit. If anyone in the house is allergic to stings, say so when you book.
After treatment, the evening problem should fade. Dead wasps can be vacuumed from shades and sills. Ask the technician whether the empty nest can be taken down.
Keep this page or the phone number to hand. Late-evening wasps are a good reason to make a call in the morning rather than wait until the weekend.
