Wasp Nest in a Hedge or Bush – What Willesborough Garden Owners Should Know

A trampoline or swing set next to a hedge is the kind of vibration a wasp nest does not forgive, so children need to be kept clear.

Play areas and hedges often sit together

Many families put the trampoline, the swing set or the playhouse in a corner of the garden, up against a hedge to keep it out of the way. That corner is also what a wasp colony picks: sheltered, undisturbed and warm. In Willesborough, part of Ashford, a family garden is often arranged this way, and wasps do not care whose it is.

A trampoline sends repeated jolts into the ground, and a swing frame shakes the soil and the hedge it stands next to. Wasps detect vibration very well, and a colony of 2,000 to 10,000 or more by August will defend itself. Children bouncing next to it are at real risk, and they will not run away calmly.

If you cannot move the equipment away from the hedge, consider whether it could be placed somewhere else for the rest of the season. A trampoline in the middle of the lawn, away from cover, is much less likely to disturb a nest than one tucked into a corner. Wait until the nest is dealt with before moving it.

What to look for around the equipment

Walk the play area when the children are in school or indoors.

If you see any of this, stop children using the equipment and clear them from the area before explaining why.

Make a point of telling other parents whose children visit, so that nobody is caught out. A short text before a playdate is sufficient, and it avoids an awkward conversation later.

Telling children what to do

Children are better protected when they know what is happening. Keep it simple and calm: there are wasps in the hedge, so nobody goes near it or plays in that corner until a person has made it safe. Explain that running and screaming makes wasps cross, and walking away slowly is the best response if one comes close.

If a ball or toy goes into the hedge, tell them to leave it. They can have a new one, or it can be collected later. Tell them not to throw things at the hedge or poke it with a stick, however curious they are.

If you have a school-age child, think about the bus stop or the walk home too. Children who have seen wasps in the hedge may be anxious about going out, and a calm talk about what will happen and when the nest will be dealt with helps them feel safe. A nest treated promptly means normal play again within a short time.

Making the garden safe in the meantime

  1. Stop using the trampoline, swings or playhouse that sits near the hedge.
  2. Fold or cover the trampoline if you can do it without going near the nest.
  3. Move the sandpit, paddling pool and toys away from the hedge.
  4. Keep drinks and snacks indoors, as sweet food draws wasps.
  5. Check the garden for stragglers before letting children out.

If a child is stung, take them indoors, wash the sting, remove it if visible and use a cold pack. Dial 999 straight away if anyone develops swelling of the face, lips or throat, a widespread rash or wheezing or difficulty breathing.

Trampoline nets and swing-set canopies can trap a wasp or two inside, and children cannot get out quickly. Check them before letting anyone in, from outside and from a distance, and brush any wasps away gently with a long-handled broom if they are at the entrance. Do not do it near the hedge.

Keep dogs on a lead near the play area, as they are drawn to the hedge in the same way children are. A dog that disturbs the nest puts the children at risk as well.

Children's play also means water, sweets and sticky hands. A garden that has had a picnic attracts wasps from a wide area. Wipe the children's faces and hands before they go out to play, and put snack wrappers in a sealed bin.

Treatment

A fully insured, qualified technician will treat the nest in a single visit on the day you book if you need same-day service. The price is a fixed £120 per nest, with £60 for an additional nest at the same address, and there is no call-out charge. Same-day service is available, we are open seven days a week and evening and weekend appointments suit families who work during the week.

Ring 01622 410 019 or use the booking form on the contact page. Tell us there are children in the household and whether anyone is allergic to stings, so the booking can be prioritised.

Parties and birthdays need special thought. Sweet drinks, ice cream and balloons attract wasps, and a nest close to the garden turns a party into a risk. If you have an event booked, tell us the date when you ring so the nest can be treated beforehand.

Getting the play area back

Do not rush to restart the trampoline. Ask the technician when it is fine to use the area again, and whether the empty nest can be taken down. When play resumes, check the hedge before each session for a day or two.

From late April onwards, make the hedge check part of the first sunny weekend of the season. A quick look takes a minute and could stop a repeat.

If you run a nursery, a childminding group or a school with a garden, the same applies. We work with commercial customers, and a visit can be booked for when the children are not in the setting.

Frequently asked questions

Can children play in the rest of the garden?
If the rest of the garden is well away from the hedge, usually yes, but keep a close watch and keep food and drink covered.
Is it safe to move the trampoline myself?
Not near an active nest. Moving it shakes the ground. Wait for the technician.
Why are wasps drawn to a sandpit or paddling pool?
They look for water and sweet things. Cover the sandpit and keep the pool away from the hedge until the nest is treated.
