Same-Day Wasp Nest Treatment in Wittersham – What to Expect

A wasp nest begins tiny in spring and grows all summer, so the date on the calendar changes what you see and how soon you should ring.

A nest that starts small

Every wasp nest begins with something small. In late April, depending on the weather, a queen looks for a sheltered spot and starts building. At that stage the nest is no bigger than a golf ball, and the only sign may be an occasional large wasp investigating a gap in the eaves, a hole in a wall or a bush.

Most people do not notice at this point, and that is understandable. A single wasp seems no threat. But the early weeks are when the colony is founded, and what happens next is a steady build-up. Workers hatch and take over the building and foraging, the nest expands, and by midsummer there may be a constant stream of traffic.

The practical lesson is that the earlier a nest is noticed, the smaller and simpler the job tends to be in terms of risk to your household. Same-day service is offered, so you can act on a spring sighting without waiting.

Even in early spring, when it is tempting to dismiss a large wasp as a harmless visitor, it is worth noting where it goes. A queen that keeps returning to one gap under a roof tile or into a hole in a bank has probably chosen her spot, and the nest she founds will become the busy colony of midsummer.

Midsummer: the numbers climb

By June and July the colony is well established. More workers are flying, and you may begin to notice wasps in the garden, at the kitchen window or around the bins. This is when many nests are discovered, often by accident, when someone trims a hedge or opens a shed door.

At this stage the nest can already be large, and it keeps growing. A little vigilance goes a long way. Look at the roof edge, the shed, the hedges and the ground when the weather is warm and the wasps are active, and watch for a regular line of traffic.

Because the nest is growing every day, putting off the call only raises the chance of a sting and the number of wasps indoors. Ring as soon as you are reasonably sure there is a nest, and describe what you see.

Keep in mind that the number of wasps you can see is only part of the picture. The workers out foraging at any moment are a fraction of the whole colony, so a modest flow of wasps can still mean a sizeable nest behind it.

August: the peak

The colony reaches its peak in August. A nest can then hold from 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more. This is the time of year when wasps are most noticeable and most irritable, wandering over food, drinks and sweet things, and responding sharply to anything that seems to threaten the nest.

It is also the time when the calls are most frequent, so diaries fill up. Same-day service cannot be promised for every call, and calling early in the day is the best way to get a place. Appointments are available in the evening and at weekends, and out-of-hours emergencies can go through the online form.

If anyone in your household is allergic to stings, mention it when you book, so the booking can be prioritised.

Think too about who will be affected as the season goes on. A garden used little in spring might host a school-holiday party, a barbecue or a child's birthday in August, when the nest is at its largest.

Late summer and autumn

As summer ends, the picture changes again. Wasps at this time of year seem to become more interested in sweet food and drink, and they can appear in large numbers around bins, fruit and picnic tables. It is easy to assume that any wasp problem at this point is simply the season, and that nothing can be done.

In fact, a nest that is still active in September remains a nest, with everything that implies. If wasps are still passing in and out of one spot, it is worth treating. If they are simply scavenging, covering food and drink and tidying fallen fruit may be all that is needed.

Whichever it is, you can ring and describe what you see. Our staff would rather help you work it out than leave you guessing.

What stays the same all year

Whatever the month, the same simple rules apply. Keep clear of the nest. Keep children and pets away. Do not block, spray or knock it. Shut windows on the nest side, and put away sweet food. Make a note of where the wasps are flying and ring.

The price is also the same all year: £120 for one nest, £60 for an additional nest on the same property, with no call-out charge and no extra for the time of day or the location. The technicians are fully insured and qualified, and the visit is one visit guaranteed.

A simple seasonal routine

A routine through the year costs almost nothing. In April and May, take a slow walk round the property on a warm day and glance at the eaves, vents, sheds and hedges, noting any larger wasps investigating gaps. In June and July, look again after warm spells, watching for a regular stream of traffic. In August, be most careful with food and drink outdoors and keep a close eye on children and pets near any known nest.

In September and October, tidy up fallen fruit and open bins, which draw wasps in. It is also a good moment to look for gaps that could be filled once the colony has finished, so that nothing is available next spring. Never fill a gap that wasps are still using.

The nest is much smaller in spring and grows through the summer. Whatever the date, keep clear of it and book a treatment.
