Why You Should Never Ignore a Wasp Nest
A few wasps by the gutter can turn into a nest of thousands by midsummer. Here is why it pays to deal with it early.
It starts small and keeps growing
It might begin with a few wasps flying near a gutter or shed. Wasps start building their nests from late April, depending on the weather, and a nest keeps growing through the summer. A single nest can come to hold from 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps, so what looks minor in spring can be a real problem by late summer.
The risks of leaving a nest
- Stings. Wasps can swarm and sting if they feel threatened, and the nearer the nest is to a door, path or garden, the easier it is to disturb by accident.
- Allergic reactions. If anyone in the family is allergic to wasp stings, a nest close to the home is a serious worry. Tell us when you book and we will make you a priority.
- Wasps indoors. A nest in the roof space or a wall can send wasps into the living areas.
Where nests hide
Wasps build in any crack or crevice that has a void behind it: the eaves of the house, loft spaces, wall cavities, chimneys, garden walls, sheds, trees, bushes and birdhouses. A steady line of wasps going in and out of one spot is usually the giveaway. Watch from a distance and do not block the gap or poke at it.
