When Is Wasp Season in East Farleigh?

The nests you cannot yet see in April are the ones that cause the trouble in August, so a few minutes of early checking and a prompt call can save a difficult summer.

Why April matters more than August

Most householders only think about wasps when they are already a nuisance, which is usually in July or August. By then the nest has been growing for months and is at its busiest. The best time to deal with a nest is much earlier, in the spring, when it has only just been started.

Nest-building begins from late April, depending on the weather. At that stage the nest is small, there are far fewer wasps around, and it is usually in a place that is easy to identify. A nest that is dealt with then never gets the chance to become the summer-long problem that sends people running from their own patio.

If you live in East Farleigh, or anywhere else in the area, this advice is the same. The calendar is the point, not the postcode: the sooner a nest is found, the easier it is to treat and the less disruption you have.

What you are looking for in spring

A nest in April or May is not the grey papery football people picture. It may be a small structure hidden in a gap, and you may never see the nest at all. What you see is the activity.

Signs that a nest is being started:

One wasp in the kitchen in April does not mean a nest in the house. It is the pattern, the same flight path again and again, that points to a nest nearby.

What not to do in the early weeks

It can be tempting to take matters into your own hands when the nest still looks small. This is the point where people make the most avoidable mistakes.

Do not block an entrance hole. Wasps that cannot get out the way they came in can find another route, and that sometimes leads into the house. Do not poke at the nest, drench it with a garden product, or knock it down with a pole. Even a small nest has wasps that will defend it, and they can swarm and sting if they feel threatened.

The calm approach is to keep a safe distance, make a note of where the activity is, and let a trained technician take over. Fully insured and qualified technicians have the equipment and training to do the job, and you do not need to be standing next to it.

A simple spring routine that takes ten minutes

You do not need to become an expert to catch an early nest. A short routine, repeated through April and May, is enough.

Pick a mild, dry afternoon, when wasps are most likely to be flying, and walk slowly round the outside of the property. Start at the front door and work clockwise, looking up at the roofline first, then along the walls, then at the ground. Spend a little longer at any point where there is a gap: where a pipe enters the wall, where the fascia meets the brick, where a shed roof overhangs.

Then stand still for a couple of minutes at the places that look likely. Wasps entering a nest follow a straight, purposeful line, quite unlike the wandering flight of a wasp looking for food. If you see that line more than once, you have probably found the entrance.

Write down the spot, and take a photo from a safe distance if you can. It makes the conversation at booking much easier, and the technician will know where to go.

Do this a couple of times a month until the end of June. If nothing turns up, you have lost nothing, and you will know the property much better.

What the rest of the season looks like if a nest is left

Left alone, the colony grows through the summer. A nest can hold from 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps by the time it peaks in August, and the area around it becomes harder to use. Gardens, washing lines, back doors and bins all become places to avoid.

Late in the season there is a second problem. As the year turns, the wasps become very interested in sweet food and drink, and they are much more noticeable around people. That is the point at which many households call in a hurry.

It helps to see the season as three stages:

  1. Spring: a small nest, a few wasps, easy to miss and easy to treat.
  2. Summer: a growing colony, steady traffic, rising risk near doors and windows.
  3. August onwards: a large colony and wasps everywhere at mealtimes.

Frequently asked questions

How early in the year can wasps build a nest?
Nests are started from late April, depending on the weather. That is when you are most likely to see the first signs of activity around eaves, walls and the ground.
Will a small spring nest go away by itself?
You should not count on it. A nest that is left tends to grow through the summer, so it is better to have it treated early than to wait and hope.
Can I treat an early nest myself?
It is not recommended. Even a small nest has wasps ready to defend it. Keep your distance and have a trained technician deal with it.
