Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Grays

A nest that started with one wasp in spring can hold thousands of wasps by August, which is why a small gap at the roof edge can produce so much traffic.

From one insect to thousands

A wasp colony begins in spring with a single wasp, which builds a small nest and raises the first workers. Those workers then take over, enlarging the nest and feeding the next generation. Each generation is bigger than the last, and by the height of summer the colony is large.

A nest can hold from two thousand to ten thousand wasps or more at its peak in August. That is why a gap that looks no larger than a coin can seem to be pouring insects. The cavity behind it is far bigger than you can see.

The size of the nest also explains why wasps seem to appear from nowhere in late summer. Throughout June and July the colony is expanding, but a household may not see more than a handful of wasps. When the numbers reach a threshold, the traffic at the entrance becomes obvious, almost overnight.

Why August is the peak

The colony grows with the warmth of the season. More workers means more food gathered, which means more grubs, which means more workers. By August the nest has reached its largest size, and the foraging flights are at their busiest.

This is the time of year when most people notice a nest, even if it has been growing quietly since April. It is not that the nest has appeared suddenly, but that it has finally become impossible to ignore.

Weather in the earlier months affects how big the nest grows. A warm, dry spring helps a colony get off to a flying start, while a cold wet one slows it down. This is why some years seem to be worse than others, and why different houses on the same street can see different amounts of activity.

It is a fair question to ask why, if the nest is so large in August, it cannot simply be left until it dies away. The answer is that the colony is at its most active in the weeks when you are most likely to be outdoors, and it remains a risk until the weather turns. Few people want to share the garden with it for another month or two.

What the numbers mean for safety

A larger colony defends its nest with more force. Guards respond quickly to disturbance, and there are many of them. Anything that vibrates the wall, shadows the entrance or blocks the route can bring out a large number of wasps at once.

The more wasps there are, the more food they need. In late summer that means a lot of wasps looking for sugar, which is why people see them at picnic tables, bins and fruit. A big nest near the house means a big population of foraging wasps in the garden.

Reading the signs of a big nest

A busy entrance with a stream of wasps in both directions, a loud hum audible from the ground, a lot of pale debris below and wasps appearing indoors are all signs of a mature colony. If you see them, do not wait to see whether things quieten down.

A big nest is no harder to deal with in terms of cost, as the price is fixed, but it is more hazardous for householders to be near, so it deserves a prompt call.

If the nest is large, you may notice that the wasps defend a wider area than you expect. Some householders find that wasps follow them for several metres from the wall. If that happens, walk away calmly, indoors if possible, and do not run or flap.

Householders sometimes find a small number of wasps indoors well before they notice the nest. In a big colony, a few stray insects may find their way through gaps or open windows, and their presence in the house is a strong hint that a large nest is close. Keep windows near the roof edge closed.

Treatment, price and repair

Naturally, treatment is a fixed £120 per nest, with no call-out charge and one visit guaranteed. There is no extra for a large nest, since the price does not depend on size. Another nest found at the same address is charged at £60 extra. Sensibly, the technician is fully insured and qualified.

Afterwards, have the gap sealed, and ask the technician whether the empty nest can be taken down. If someone has been stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and apply a cold pack, and call 999 for signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Do not assume that a large nest means a long wait for treatment. Same-day service is offered, and the office will do its best to fit you in, but no response time is promised. Ring early in the day if you can.

Another factor is the household. If a child, an older person or someone with a sting allergy lives at the property, a large nest is a more serious worry than a small one. Mention these circumstances at booking, so that the visit can be prioritised.

Booking in Grays

You can ring 01622 410 019 or use the online form on the contact page. The business is open seven days a week with same-day service and has evening and weekend appointments for domestic and commercial customers.

Tell the office if anyone at home has a sting allergy, so the visit can be prioritised.

When the nest has been treated, you may see wasps around the wall for a short while. They are returning foragers, and they will disappear in time.

After treatment, plan the gap repair for the autumn, and take a short look at the roof edge next April. Spotting the first wasp is far easier than coping with the full colony four months later.
