Wasp Nest Treatment in Luddesdown – Why Early Action Matters

Banks, verges and field-edge paths hide ground nests that dogs and walkers find by accident, so spotting one in spring is worth the effort.

The nest you find with your feet

Some wasp nests are discovered by eyesight. Others are discovered when a dog puts its nose in a hole, or a walker steps on a bank. Ground nests are hidden by turf, leaf litter and roots, and the entrance may be nothing more than a small dark opening in the side of a bank or the edge of a path.

For anyone in Luddesdown who walks a dog, rides or simply tends a large garden, the lesson is to keep an eye on the ground as well as the house. From late April, depending on the weather, wasps start nesting, and the colony keeps growing through the summer.

Those who ride horses or ponies should be careful too. A horse that steps over a ground nest can react suddenly. If you ride on tracks regularly, take note of any spot where wasps are seen going in and out, and avoid it until you know it has been dealt with.

Where ground nests appear

Ground nests are common in places that are dry, sheltered and undisturbed.

The sign is the same each time: a steady line of wasps to and from a small hole. If you see it, stay away, and keep dogs on a lead near the spot.

Rough grass and long verges are good at hiding entrances, and it is often only after a path has been strimmed or mown that the hole becomes visible. If you hear a mower or strimmer change pitch and then see wasps rising, stop at once, switch off if it is safe and move away.

Dogs and early action

A dog that sniffs at a ground nest is likely to be stung on the face and nose, and may panic, run and carry wasps with it. The owner then gets stung while trying to help. A dog that is stung repeatedly needs a vet, and we cannot advise on animal treatment, but we can say that preventing the encounter is far easier than dealing with it.

Early treatment helps in two ways. A small nest has fewer wasps and less capacity to defend itself. And treating it in May means the dog's favourite spot is safe for the rest of the summer. By August, the colony may hold 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps, and a walk along that bank can turn into an emergency.

Children playing near banks or den-building in hedge bottoms are exposed as well. Make sure they know to leave holes alone and tell an adult if wasps are flying around one.

If your dog is stung, wash the area gently, keep the dog calm and contact a vet. We cannot give veterinary advice, but a vet can tell you what to look out for.

What to do on a walk if you see wasps

Walking near a nest is a matter of calm and distance.

  1. Stop and stand still if you notice wasps flying low from a hole in front of you.
  2. Walk slowly away in the direction you came from. Do not run or wave your arms.
  3. Keep a dog close and on a lead as you leave.
  4. Avoid the spot for the rest of the day, and warn anyone else heading that way.
  5. Note where it is, so you can tell us.

For a sting, wash with soap and water, remove the sting if it is visible and hold a cold pack on the area. If you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999.

Avoid the temptation to fill the hole with soil, stones or water. It will not help and will make the wasps more agitated.

Keep a note of the location in terms that anyone can follow, such as the third fence post from the gate or a particular tree on the bank. Share it with everyone who uses the path so no one has to guess.

Take care with gates and stiles too. A path that has been walked many times can run right beside an entrance, and a gate post is as good a place as any for a hole. If you see wasp traffic by a gate you use daily, find another way through until the nest has been dealt with.

Remember that dogs follow scent, not warnings. A walker who has seen the wasps and gone a different way may still find that the dog is already sniffing at the hole.

Who treats it, and what it costs

If the nest is on your own land or garden, we can treat it. Any further nest on the property is priced at £60 per nest. If the nest is on land you do not own, such as a verge or a neighbour's field, talk to the owner first, as we can only attend with permission. Our technicians hold full insurance and are qualified for the work.

Ground nests in banks may need a little care in reaching, so describe the slope, the surface and the distance from the house, and tell us whether the technician can get close by vehicle.
