Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Wye? Here's What to Do
Not everyone can be at home on a weekday morning, so here is how evening, weekend and urgent out-of-hours treatment works for a loft nest.
When the day job gets in the way
A wasp nest does not choose a convenient moment. For many households, the weekday hours when a technician would normally call are exactly the hours when everyone is out. Parents are at work, children are at school and nobody can wait around for a visit.
That is why we offer more than the usual office hours. We are open every day, can often come the same day, and keep evening and weekend appointments free. If a nest has been discovered on a Friday evening, there is no need to wait until Monday.
For people who work shifts, nights or long commutes, even evenings can be awkward. Say so on the call, and we will do our best to find a time that suits. Some people arrange for a neighbour or relative to let the technician in.
How evening appointments work
An evening visit is arranged in the same way as any other. You contact us, describe the problem and agree a time. The same technician, fully insured and qualified, will arrive and carry out the same work. The price is the same too: a fixed £120 per nest, £60 for an additional nest on the same property, with no extra charge for time of day.
Evening visits suit people for several reasons:
- You can be at home without taking time off work.
- Children are home, but can be kept clear of the hatch.
- The loft is cooler than at midday in summer.
- Neighbours are around if access needs organising.
Light matters a little. In late autumn it is dark early, so mention if there is outside lighting or a loft light.
If your loft is not lit, tell us. A technician will bring suitable equipment, but it helps to know what the roof space is like. Please do not try to improvise a lighting solution, such as running an extension lead into the loft.
Weekends
Saturdays and Sundays are among the most popular times for visits. If you have been away or at work all week and noticed the problem at the weekend, you can book in without waiting. The weekend price is exactly the same as a weekday price.
Because weekends are busy, it helps to contact us as early as possible. Same-day service is offered where we can, but it cannot be promised, so a call in the morning gives the best chance.
Plan the evening around the visit: put pets in a room at the back of the house, keep children occupied downstairs and have the landing clear. It also helps to switch off any loud appliances near the hatch, so the technician can hear instructions.
Emergencies out of hours
Sometimes a situation cannot wait. If wasps are pouring into a bedroom at night, or someone has been stung and the nest is in the house, you can use the online form to request emergency service outside normal office hours. Describe what is happening and give a contact number.
If anyone has swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999 first. Medical help comes before pest control. Anyone with a known allergy should tell us when they book, so the booking can be prioritised.
What to do while waiting
Whatever time the visit is, the advice is the same. Keep the loft hatch shut. Do not spray, poke or block anything. Open a window in any room with a stray wasp and close the door behind you. Keep children and pets away from the landing. If it is dusk, do not shine torches at the roof edge.
At night, wasps settle, and you may feel the problem has passed. It has not. The colony is still there and will be active again in the morning.
Keep your phone nearby and on. If the technician is running late, a short call is easier than a missed one. Likewise, if your plans change, ring and let us know so the appointment can be rearranged.
A word about expectations. An evening visit means the technician may work as light fades, and in the colder months it will be dark quickly. If you have outside lighting near the house, switch it on. If the loft has no light, mention it when you book.
If you are tired after a long day, remember that you do not have to supervise. Show the technician the hatch, then retreat to another room with the family. They will call down when they are finished and explain what happened.
At weekends, early slots go fast. If you can be flexible about the time, tell us, since it helps us fit you in sooner. And if you have any doubts about whether your problem is urgent, ask. We would rather talk it through than have you wait anxiously.
Booking
Phone 01622 410 019 or use the booking form on the contact page. Give your address, a description of what you have seen, a good phone number and the times you will be home. We cover domestic and commercial properties, and the technician travels to Wye and the surrounding villages.
One visit is guaranteed, and there is no call-out charge. Once the nest is treated, a few dead wasps may turn up beside the hatch or along the landing. A vacuum or a brush and pan will clear them. If you want the empty nest removed, ask at booking whether it can be taken down.
Out-of-hours help is also useful for businesses. A shop, surgery or small workshop with a nest overhead may want the work done after closing, so staff and customers are not around. Tell us when the premises are empty and who holds the keys, and the visit can be planned around that. The price is the same for commercial premises as for homes.
