Same-Day Wasp Nest Treatment in Wye – What to Expect
Sheds and garages offer dry, quiet corners that wasps love, but they also hold the tools and clutter that can make a visit harder.
Why wasps pick a shed
A shed, garage or outbuilding is dry, sheltered and rarely disturbed, which is exactly what a queen looks for in late spring. Wasps start building nests from late April, depending on the weather, and a gap in the roof, a hole in a wall or a loose door can be all they need.
By the time you notice, the nest may have been growing for weeks. By August it can hold from 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more. Because outbuildings are not visited daily, the first sign is often a line of wasps at the door, or a sting when someone reaches for a tool.
Same-day service is available, but it cannot be assured for all callers. If you have found wasps in a shed, ring early, and stay out of the building until the nest has been dealt with.
Garages attached to the house deserve special attention, because a nest in the garage roof or wall may be only a few feet from a bedroom. Treat any wasps coming out of an integral garage with the same seriousness as a nest in the house itself.
Do not go in
The most important rule is to stay out. Do not open the door to look, do not reach in for a bike or a mower, and do not let children use the building as a den or a playroom.
If you must open it, for example to move something urgent, do so for the shortest time, from the side and with the way out clear. Better still, wait. Closing the door of a shed does not bother the wasps, but opening it can lead to a swarm.
Do not seal the gap they are using. They may find a path into the house or the garden instead. Do not spray into the building, either. It will not deal with the colony.
Make sure everyone in the household, including visiting relatives, knows the shed is off limits.
Keep dogs and cats away from the door, too. A pet that sniffs at the gap under a shed door is in the line of fire, and a stung animal in a confined space is hard to help.
Sorting out what is in the way
Outbuildings are often crowded, and the technician needs space to work.
- Do not move items near the nest, even if they are in the way.
- Tell the technician what is stored in the building, for example gas bottles, fuel or fragile items.
- Say whether there is a window, a hatch or a roof panel they can reach from outside.
- Clear a path to the door, if that can be done without going near the wasps.
- Tell them if the building is locked and where the key is.
If you share the building with a neighbour or a business, let them know. Wasps do not respect ownership, and the other user may walk in without warning.
Take a photograph of the outside of the building from a safe distance, with the gap or door in view. It lets the technician recognise the right building at once, which matters if you have several sheds or an allotment-style plot.
Describing it when you ring
Say what the building is: a wooden shed, a brick garage, a lean-to. Say which part the wasps are using, such as a gap under the eaves, a crack beside the door or a hole in the floor. Mention whether there is more than one outbuilding, because wasps can nest in several.
The pricing is straightforward: £120 for one nest, £60 for any additional nest on the same property, no call-out charge. It does not change with where the nest is or when the visit takes place. If anyone is allergic to stings, mention it when booking, so the booking can be prioritised.
You can call 01622 410 019 or use the online form for a booking in Wye. Evening and weekend appointments are available.
If the building has a loft area or a mezzanine, mention that too, since nests are often built high up in the roof space.
After the visit
Technicians are fully insured and qualified, and aim for a safe and effective treatment. Afterwards, keep the shed shut and avoid it for the rest of the day. A few wasps may still be around the old entrance for a time.
Ask the technician whether the empty nest can be taken down. When it is safe to do so, tidy the building, check for gaps and repair them, so that new queens do not find the same spot next spring.
Clutter inside the shed is a different story from clutter outside. Leave it where it is until the nest has been treated, and give yourself time afterwards for a proper sort-out.
Keeping the building safe afterwards
Once the nest has been treated, the shed or garage still needs a little attention. Allow the day to pass before going back in, and open the door slowly the next time, standing to one side. If you notice a few wasps inside, open a window or the door wide and let them leave rather than swatting.
Check the building for gaps in the roof, the walls and around the door. Filling them in spring, before wasps start building from late April, is the best way to stop the same spot being chosen again. Do not fill the gap while any wasps are still using it, and ask the technician what they advise. If wasps are still using the same hole a day later, send us a message through the contact page.
